Florida and Vanderbilt’s offenses

– The hardest thing to watch this season has been the Florida Gators in games that they should ‘easily’ win. When the Gators faced Missouri and Kentucky earlier in the season it was hard to watch because both teams struggled offensively. That offensive bug bit the Gators again on Saturday against Vanderbilt with the SEC East title on the line.  Luckily for Florida, it bit Vandy worse.

Vanderbilt hasn’t been able to have any real offensive production this season and I would argue that their only SEC win this season was a fluke.  Going up against a solid Florida defense, it wasn’t shocking that they didn’t do well.

  • Vanderbilt only had 30 yards of passing offense and, if you take off running back Ralph Webb’s 74-yard touchdown run, the Commodores would have been held to only 73 rushing yards.

The final score was 9-7 in favor of Florida. The reason the score was so low was due to the equally terrible Florida offense.

Sure Gators quarterback Treon Harris threw for 158 yards.  But he also threw his first interception of the season and fumbled the ball numerous times in the first half. If the Gators didn’t get a lucky field goal from a shaky kicker in Austin Hardin, the Gators could very well have lost to Vanderbilt and became the butt of all jokes regarding SEC football for the next year.

But, they pulled it out and earned a spot in the SEC title game on Dec. 5.  I think they will get demolished there if they meet Alabama.   Against everyone else from the West, the Gators have a chance because of their defense. Their offense needs some major help.

    Kyler Murray, QB, Texas A&M

    – After a breakout week that landed him on the Best of the Week list in week 9, Kyler Murray was met with a harsh welcome to the SEC against Auburn in week 10.

Auburn has been one of the weaker teams this season in the SEC, but you couldn’t tell against A&M on Saturday as they won 26-10.

Murray had a decent day — completing 13 of his 23 passing attempts for 105 yards and added 37 yards on the ground.

The major problem, though?  Murray also completed three other passes in the game – all of them were interceptions to the Auburn defense.

No receiver for A&M had over 50 yards in the game and the Aggies faltered with the SEC West seemingly wide open.

The loss marks the third in the conference for TAMU and puts them out of contention for the SEC West title unless Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss lose every game down the stretch.

Look for Murray to keep improving as the season winds down and play well leading up to the last game of the season against LSU.

    Patrick Towles, QB, Kentucky

    – Perhaps maybe the most disappointing thing to come from the SEC football season is the decline of Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles.

To begin the season, the Wildcats were predicted to have a decent season.  Many saw the Wildcats at least winning over half of their games and Towles was supposed to be the catalyst that got them there.

With his play lately and the threat of Louisville awaiting the Wildcats in the final week of the season, it doesn’t seem like Kentucky will do better that 6-6.

In Kentucky’s 27-3 loss to Georgia on Saturday, Towles threw for just 96 yards and two interceptions.

Although Towles has tallied over 2000 yards passing on the season, he doesn’t seem to be helping his team win the close games or even games that aren’t close. Very disappointing. Very bad performance in week 10.
