The Southeastern Conference has been the best conference in college football for a while now, and a lot of that is credited to coaching.

This current crop of SEC football coaches is not as strong as it’s been in recent years. You only have to go a few years back to when the SEC had guys like Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Les Miles, and Mark Richt, all of which would be the second best coach in the SEC, given the current coaching landscape.

In 2016, the SEC was not the best conference, far from it actually. Every team in the SEC, outside of Alabama, had at least four losses.

And you can look no further than the head coaches for the reason. There is currently two head coaches in the SEC that have ever won an SEC championship in Nick Saban and Gus Malzahn. And Jim McElwain is the only other coach in the conference that’s even been to the SEC Title game.

It seems like half the conference has second or third-year head coaches, while the other half of the conference is one down season away from firing their head coach.
