There are 79 days till the start of the college football season, and today we focus on one of the biggest blowouts of the 2016 season.

Every SEC football team plays eight conference games and four out-of-conference games. At least one or two of those out-of-conference games will be against a power 5 conference team, but then there are the cupcake games to pad the schedule, and some of those games are more one-sided than others.

And that leads us to no. 79 on the Southbound and Down College Football Countdown.

On Sept. 24 the Delaware State Hornets traveled to Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers. The Tigers were 1-2 and were coming off a heartbreaking 28-27 loss to Georgia. And they took their frustration out on the Hornets.

Missouri needed less than two minutes to score their first touchdown, and the score was 30-0 by the end of the first. The Tigers continued the barrage in the second quarter and took a 58-0 lead into the half. They ended up winning by a final score of 79-0.

The 79 points were the most points scored by any SEC team in 2016, and it also shattered the previous school record of 69, which Missouri had done three different times.

Missouri out-gained Delaware State 698 to 140 in total offense and also won the turnover battle 4-0. But it wasn’t exactly a stellar opponent. Not only were the Hornets an FCS school, they also went 0-11 in 2016, finishing in last place in the MEAC.

Missouri opens the 2017 season with another FCS opponent in the Missouri State Bears, so we’ll see if the Tigers can set another school record this season.
