Auburn Tigers: 69 for SEC scoring leader
By Matt Green
There are 69 days till the start of the college football season, and today we focus on one of the best kickers in the history of the SEC.
Having a good kicker can be the difference between winning and losing football games, and for the past three years the Auburn Tigers have had one of the best in the SEC, as well as the country.
And that brings us to no. 69 in the Southbound and Down College Football Countdown.
Auburn’s Daniel Carlson has 69 career field goals
Must Read: 2016 will be no. 70 for Arkansas and TCU
Daniel Carlson has been a model of consistency for the Auburn Tigers over the last three seasons. He is 69-for-83 on field goals in his career, which is good for 83.1 percent. He’s also 141-for-141 in his career on extra points.

Georgia’s Billy Bennett owns the SEC all-time record with 87 career field goals. Carlson needs just 19 field goals this season to own the all-time SEC record.
In 2016, Carlson connected on 28 of his 32 (87.5 percent) field goal attempts and was 44-for-44 on extra points. That mark was good for second in the SEC in field goal percentage. Only Ole Miss’ Gary Wunderlich was better, hitting 95.7 percent of his field goal attempts, which was the best in college football.
Carlson led the SEC in scoring last season with 134 points. And if you’re some sort of math guru and you noticed that 28 field goals and 44 extra points does not add up to 134, you would be correct. Against Arkansas State, Auburn ran a fake field goal and Carlson took it 20 yards for a touchdown, the only touchdown of his career.
A different Georgia kicker, Blair Walsh, is actually the SEC’s all-time scoring leader with 412 points. With 354 career points, Carlson only needs just 59 points to break that record.
So while we may have no idea what the Auburn Tigers’ season will hold, you can pencil in Daniel Carlson to be at the top of the SEC record books by season’s end.
