There are 63 days remaining till college football season, and today we focus on the biggest single-game output of the 2016 season.

Joshua Dobbs started 35 career games for the Tennessee Volunteers, but Nov. 19, 2016 was the final start of his stellar career. After going 23-12 as the starting quarterback in Knoxville, Dobbs ended his career in style in his final game at Neyland Stadium.

And that leads us to no. 63 in the Southbound and Down College Football Countdown.

Tennessee Volunteers scored 63 points in their 63-37 win over Missouri in 2016

Tennessee didn’t come out of the gates fast, but they turned it on, as you can imagine with a team that scored 63 points. The 63 points were the most points scored in any SEC game this season, and the most points Tennessee has scored since their 63-7 victory over Western Kentucky in 2009.

More from Southbound and Down

This game was actually a lot closer than the 63-7 score line may indicate. They led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and led 21-20 going into halftime. Then a Missouri field goal early in the fourth cut Tennessee’s lead to 35-30.

The Vols outscored the Tigers 28-7 in the final 14 minutes of the game. On six second half drives, the Vols scored five touchdowns, and also scored on a pick-six.

And as we were saying before, Dobbs had himself a day. The senior went 15-for-22 for 223 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, but that was only half of the story. On the ground, he rushed for 190 yards on 10 carries, including two touchdown runs of 30 and 70 yards.

The Tennessee Volunteers were second in the SEC in scoring offense in 2016, averaging 36.4 points per game. With a new guy under center, we’ll see how many points they can score in 2017.
