Marquis Haynes: On the verge of history
By Matt Green
There are 24 days till college football season, and today we talk about one of the best pass rushers in SEC history.
The Ole Miss Rebels don’t have a lot going for them this season, but they do have one of the best pass rushers in the Southeastern Conference. After being named third-team all-SEC last season, Marquis Haynes is on the verge of making history. He has been in Oxford for three years where he’s terrorized opposing quarterbacks.
And that leads us to no. 24 on the Southbound and Down College Football Countdown.
Ole Miss’ Marquis Haynes has 24 career sacks

Greg Hardy is the Rebels’ all-time sack leader with 26.5. So with 24 career sacks, Haynes is almost guaranteed to become Ole Miss’ all-time sack leader.
Alabama’s Derrick Thomas is the current SEC all-time sack leader with 52. Haynes would have to break Thomas’s single-season record of 27 sacks in order to be the all-time sack leader. So while that’s unlikely, he is likely to work his way into the record books.
If Haynes repeats the 10 sacks he had as a sophomore, he will move into fourth place in SEC history. He had 7.5 sacks as a freshman, 10 as a sophomore, and then 7 as a junior.
Next: It's time to do away with preseason rankings
So while the Ole Miss fans might not have much to cheer for in 2017, they could have one one of the conference’s best pass rushers in Marquis Haynes.
