  • In what has been a historic year for basketball in the SEC, choosing All-SEC teams and yearly postseason honors had to be a difficult task for the coaches in the conference, but for some of the awards there could only be one choice.

Two words sum up the bulk of the honors, however…

    Big Blue.

Kentucky Wilcats coach John Calipari earned his second SEC Coach of the Year award, UK power forward Willie Cauley-Stein was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Karl-Anthony Towns was honored as SEC Freshman of the Year and Devin Booker was voted SEC Sixth Man of the Year by the leagues coaches.

Not surprising coming from a team that went 31-0 in what was a pretty grueling schedule. Kentucky’s 31 wins to open the season are the most in SEC history. The Wildcats earned their third SEC championship under Calipari, and the 46th in UK history.

But one of the big awards stayed out of the hands of Big Blue, as Arkansas sophomore forward Bobby Portis was selected the SEC Player of the Year, averaging 17.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks on the season. He became the first Razorback to win the award since Corliss Williamson won back-to-back POY honors in 1994 and 1995.

Alabama guard Levi Randolph was honored with the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, carrying a 3.45 undergraduate grade-point average and a 3.75 graduate level grade point average in Marketing. He’s the first Academic All-American in Alabama men’s basketball history.

Here is the complete list of All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, All-Defensive team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive, Sixth-Man and Scholar-Athlete of the Year as chosen by the league’s 14 coaches.
