2015 SEC Tournament: Finals Set With No Real Surprises

The championship game of the 2015 SEC Tournament is set, and the No. 1 and 2 seeds will meet to play for the title.

More from Arkansas Razorbacks

Auburn’s miracle run in the SEC Tournament is done, as they were handily beaten by (now 33-0) Kentucky on Saturday, 91-67, while Arkansas took out a tired and injured Georgia team, 60-49. The Wildcats and Razorbacks will now face off to determine this year’s tournament champion.

There is little pressure on either team as far as being in or out of the NCAA Tournament or playing for seeding. Both teams are secure in their position, and have little to gain. The biggest draw of this game is whether or not Arkansas can be the first team to erase the zero in Kentucky’s loss column.

If there is any team — right now, at this time — who has the guns to do it, it’s the Hogs, and their biggest gun, Bobby Portis (aka: the SEC Player of the Year).

“There’s been a tremendous history with Arkansas and Kentucky, and of course they’re playing at another level right now,” Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said about Kentucky, via ESPN. “So we look forward to the opportunity. We look forward to the challenge. We’re just going to go and be who we are.”

Who they are is a very potent offensive machine, who — when going strong — can hit from anywhere on the court at anytime.

The two teams have met once this season, on Feb. 28; a decisive 84-67 Kentucky win, and a margin that surprised many given the quality of basketball Arkansas had been playing at that time. The Razorbacks are hoping for a much different outcome on Sunday, when they try to win only their second SEC Tournament title in school history.

“That will be a great accomplishment for the state and this team,” said Arkansas guard Michael Qualls, who scored a team-high 15 points against Georgia in the semifinals.

Kentucky, for their part, would love nothing more than to double up regular season and tournament titles, and move into the NCAA Tournament a perfect 34-0, but every member of the Wildcats knows that a loss against Arkansas means little, but any loss after Sunday means the end of their dreams and their season.
