No. 12: Ole Miss Rebels – Rebel Black Bear

You have to feel sorry for Ole Miss. Their longtime mascot, Colonel Reb, was deemed too offensive for modern political correctness, so the Ole Miss faithful began a search for a new mascot a few years back.

One of the leading candidates (as submitted by students) was Admiral Ackbar.

Honestly, he probably should have won.

Not that there’s anything wrong with black bears, or that he’s not a cute looking fellow…there’s just nothing there tying “rebels” and “black bears” together. Besides, we already had Black Bears as a mascot in Maine.

At least they didn’t add another Tiger or Bulldog.
