A second major personality will be missing from ESPN’s college football coverage this season, as Lou Holtz has announced he would not return to the network next season, opting instead to retire. The announcement was confirmed by Sports Illustrated on Sunday.
An ESPN spokesperson replied via email to SI.com:
"“Lou brought a champion’s perspective and a legacy of accomplishment to our coverage along with his distinctive style and humor. We appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best in the future.”"
Earlier this year it was announced that longtime College GameDay host Chris Fowler was being replaced by Rece Davis, who also appeared on the Saturday College Football Final with Holtz and analyst, Mark May.
There were many who ridiculed the 78-year-old Holtz during his later years on the network, but one thing is certain, you were never unsure of how Holtz viewed any player, game or situation and he was never afraid of being wrong.
Per SI’s report, Holtz had said last May that he would retire from broadcasting after the 2014 season, but ESPN stated they were not aware of this decision.
This will mean further reshuffling of ESPN’s Saturday lineup, which also has some internal competition from SEC Nation, the traveling pregame show seen each week on ESPN’s SEC Network.
