1. Herschel Walker, Georgia
Bo Jackson was second on the list only because first place belongs to the best college football player in the history of the sport, Georgia’s Herschel Walker.
All three seasons Walker was at Georgia, his rushing yards totals were among the top seven all-time for yards in a single season in the SEC.
Walker ran for a total of 5259 rushing yards in three seasons and set the SEC career rushing record. Walker also amassed 49 touchdowns and won the 1982 Heisman Memorial Trophy.
Walker was the first SEC running back to win the Heisman by a majority vote since LSU’s Billy Cannon in 1959 and really opened the doors for running backs in the SEC.
Walker is not only the best running back in SEC history, he is the best player in SEC history. There is also an argument to be made that he is the best college athlete of all-time, but that’s for another day.
