SEC Football Head Coach Evaluation: Vanderbilt Commodores’ Derek Mason
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports
The Verdict:
Southbound and Down thumbs down. Robbie Caldwell went 2-10 after admirably stepping up after Bobby Johnson’s abrupt retirement in 2010. He did not get a second season. Penn State’s coach has been mentioned by name enough already, but suffice it to say he overtook a program much worse than he delivered to Derek Mason.

Mason led the Commodores to a 3-9 record, went winless in the SEC (seriously. . . even Caldwell won one conference game), and watched the Temple Owls (37-7…let that sink in) embarrass his team IN NASHVILLE to open the 2014 season. I am going to pull a Nostradamus and say Vanderbilt fans are in for a repeat season opener at the hands of another “historical power” in Western Kentucky.
Sometimes coaches get off to a rough start and get it together a after a season or two. Derek Mason’s squad gave us little reason to expect improvement in 2015. Hopefully Mason gets another chance to prove his head coaching abilities. But that should be after he rebuilds himself, and his reputation, as a defensive coordinator at a power 5 school.
