No. 1: Greg Sankey
The furthest thing from being a household name on this list is Greg Sankey. If you polled 100 random college football fans on what Mr. Sankey’s position is, 99 wouldn’t be able to answer the question.
But starting on August 1, 2015 he will be the most powerful man in SEC sports. Sankey will become the commissioner of the conference, filling the big shoes of Mike Slive. Slive was one of the greatest commissioners collegiate sports has seen to date.
During his time at the helm of the SEC (2002-2015) the conference won seven straight football titles, four baseball championships, three NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament titles, and three softball championships.
Slive also oversaw the creation of the SEC Network in his time as commissioner. Sankey has been the SEC’s number two man behind Slive since 2012, and was the former commissioner of the Southland Conference for just under seven years.
