2015 South Carolina Quarterback Carousel Continues
While more and more fans have been clamoring for Steve Spurrier to walk away after this season, the element of fortune has been far from his side in 2015. Spurrier has used three different starting quarterbacks and we have not even arrived at the halfway point of the season yet. And no, this is not old-school Spurrier yanking quarterbacks around at the first sign of incompetence. Injuries have absolutely devastated the South Carolina quarterback position this year.

First, starter Connor Mitch was lost for the season after only the second game of the year (a loss to Kentucky). Perry Orth was named the starter and lasted only one game as a starter. A former walk-on, Orth completed only 53.8% of his passes for 269 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Lorenzo Nunez was called on to play against Georgia and was handed the started job afterwards.
Nunez was having an unspectacular year but is the clear quarterback of the future. He has the potential to turn into a quality SEC starter and would have remained the Gamecock’s quarterback moving forward. At least he likely would have. That opportunity has now been lost as well.
Barrett Sallee of Bleacher Report has reported that Lorenzo Nunez will not start Saturday in Baton Rouge. While not a terrible idea to spare him the misery of starting what should have been a home game in Baton Rouge, it appears that the move has been made due to Nunez still dealing with some lingering injury issues. Sallee reported that while Nunez was still dealing with some shoulder issues, he could see some playing time Saturday if the staff deems him healthy enough to compete.
For the second time this year that leaves Perry Orth to fill-in, at least for one week, as the starter for South Carolina. While fans may want to see Steve Spurrier walk away sooner rather than later, we can all agree the guy has had some serious misfortune with his quarterbacks in 2015.
