5.  Chad Kelly

I really wanted to put Joshua Dobbs in this 5th spot after finally breaking through for the big win against Georgia this past weekend.  I fought tooth and nail to keep Chad Kelly off the SEC Heisman Hopefuls List.  I typed in his name, and then I erased it.  I went and looked at his stats again compared to the rest of the quarterbacks in the SEC.  So, I typed in his name, and then I erased it again.  Then I went back and looked at Ole Miss’s remaining schedule.  Then I remembered Laremy Tunsil is coming back to help protect Chad Kelly, and now, here we are again.

I feel like Chad Kelly is that girlfriend that you broke up with because you knew it wouldn’t work.  Then you said well, maybe it will work out this time.  So, you get back together, and then you break up again.  I feel like I could be Heisman-Hopeful-dumping Kelly again this season, but I cannot justify leaving him off this list.  No, I am not impressed with his stat line against New Mexico State.  His stats matter so little that I need not even bring them up.  We’ve seen those numbers earlier this season.

I’m looking ahead to the future, and the future has Laremy Tunsil protecting him.  Sure, the Florida defense made Kelly look terrible, but to be fair, a lot of that had to with his o-line play.  Have you ever seen a player not named Charles Woodson win a Heisman without solid offensive line play?

Please.  Go ahead.  I’ll wait.

Nothing?

Alright then, lets move on.

Chad Kelly and the Ole Miss Rebels face a Memphis defense that chases ball carriers around but never catch them like girls chasing boys on the playground in kindergarten.  You’d swear they enjoy it the way they spend so much time getting burnt and trying to chase down their opponents.  Chad Kelly will go for 300+ and at least 3 touchdowns.  Then he has a huge game at home against Texas A&M, and if he can put together wins vs A&M and Alabama, then people will be more willing to forget that embarrassment in Gainesville.  If all goes as planned, people will say “Wow, that offensive line really let Kelly down in Florida.  Look how he’s played since Tunsil returned!”  Chad Kelly has been given a second chance,  and I just can’t make myself believe he won’t take advantage of it.

I also just can’t convince myself that he will take advantage of it, so he comes in at the 5-spot this week.
