Mississippi State Needs to Cut 5-Star Recruit

In no way, shape or form should Mississippi State still be allowing themselves to be associated with such a player.

Jeffery Simmons is a 5-star recruit and was seen as possibly the best signing of the year for Dan Mullen and Mississippi State.  Now, they have no choice.  Mississippi State needs to cut their prized 5-star recruit.

Video emerged over the weekend of Jeffery Simmons allegedly beating a woman.  In a Facebook post he has since apologized and cited that he will “move forward in becoming a better person.”  He cites insults to his deceased family members triggered the reaction, but there is no excuse.

247sports.com has Jeffery Simmons measuring at 6’3″, 277 pounds.  He took it upon himself to beat a woman in the street.  That is a massive human being and such an aggressive act, no matter the stimulus, cannot be ignored by Mississippi State.

More from Southbound and Down

I know this is a huge blow to the Mississippi State recruiting class, and I have yet to speak to a Mississippi State fan that has even expressed moderate support for Simmons.  I think that says a lot of good things about the fan base of Mississippi State.  Now, the real question is no longer will he or will he not play.  The question now should be, what in the world has taken Mississippi State so long to announce they’ve cut ties with Jeffery Simmons?

He not only punched this woman, he repeatedly punched her head into a concrete street as he straddled over her.  In no way, shape or form should Mississippi State still be allowing themselves to be affiliated with such a player.  Despite it being Easter weekend, there is no excuse for Mississippi State dragging their feet on this situation.  I understand innocent until proven guilty, but when the culprit has already publicly apologized for the act, it is safe to say he’s admitted his guilt.  What’s taking so long with the verdict?

The apology and the video can be viewed here at deadspin.com.  I recommend extreme caution in viewing as the images can be disturbing.
