"Dominant is the word that best describes this Florida Gators baseball team and dominance travels. Dominance on the road is a great sign for those that want to be dominant on the road to Omaha."

I’d imagine that Florida Gators baseball fans have been unable to enjoy their regular season of dominance this year because it all seems too familiar. Florida is rolling through the regular season looking dominant and holding on to the number 1 spot in most polls for the majority of the year. With the win in Knoxville today, the Florida Gators baseball team has 40 wins this year after playing only 48 games.

Florida has been relentless at home, as they only have 3 losses in the 29 games that they have played in the friendly confines of Gainesville, but that is to be expected of this Florida Gators baseball team. Dominant is the word that best describes this Florida Gators baseball team and dominance travels. Dominance on the road is a great sign for a team that wants to be dominant on the road to Omaha. Florida has already matched their road win totals from a year ago, and they still have a season-ending series to play in Baton Rouge against LSU. As long as Florida doesn’t get swept, they will surpass their win totals from a year ago, and a dominant performance will put the Florida hype at an all-time high.

So, we are going to say that the Florida Gators lose 1 more home game when Vanderbilt comes to town, and they drop 1 while the Gators are in Baton Rouge. The Florida Gators baseball team will still be ranked number 1 in the country, they still won’t have double digit losses, and they will still be more than expected to win the SEC Championship.  Regardless of the results in 2016 SEC Baseball Tournament, all eyes will be on the performance of the Gators in their Regionals and Super Regionals.

Last year post season play began with a 6-5 loss to Arkansas in the first round of the SEC Tournament. They didn’t lose again until they got to Omaha where they lost to Virginia in the first game 0-1.  They worked their way out of the loser’s bracket to meet Virginia in the finals where they took the first game 10-5, but ultimately lost to the 16th ranked Virginia team 4-5 and a championship escaped them.

More from Southbound and Down

With such a performance last year, I mean, it is basically a foregone conclusion that Florida will be in Omaha and that they will be in the championship series, right?  When expectations are that high, anything short of a championship is considered a disappointment.  Whether or not that way of judging the team’s season is right or not, there is no doubt that the expectations are justified.

Until you can prove that you can get over the hump, that preverbal monkey will always be on your back.  I say the Florida Gators baseball team is set up for disappointment, but that is only because it is championship or bust for this Florida Gators team.  The best team in the best conference takes no morale victories for regular season accomplishments, and the good news for UF fans is that this Florida team seems as if it may be read to match expectations.
