Florida Gators

More from Southbound and Down

Other than a scare in the 6-5 win against Connecticut, Florida cruised as host in their Regional and now find themselves hosting hated in-state rival Florida State. They played 3 times sporadically throughout the year, and the Gators outscored the Seminoles 19-4 in those 3 games.

The Florida State offense has been smashing the cover off of the ball. Entering the Super Regional with Florida, the Seminoles have scored 43 runs in 3 games since the beginning of the tournament. Their potent offense will be going against a UF pitching staff that has carried their great pitching into the tournament with a solid 2.00 ERA. The pitching staff is averaging 8 k’s per 9, and a K:BB ratio of 3.43.

The match up of the Seminoles’ offense versus the Gators’ defense will be huge, and the Seminoles will have to just pray their pitching staff can hold on to the lead if they gain one. Florida State’s pitching staff has a 4.00 ERA since the beginning of the tournament, and going against Florida’s offense that is currently batting .311, that could be a problem. Florida seems to dominate any team they play, as long it isn’t an SEC opponent, and I see Florida closing this out in 2 games.  Florida is the biggest favorite listed  by 5dimes at -335. Given the earlier season appearances, and Florida having home field advantage, I would feel comfortable betting heavy on this favorite. But hey, I’ve been wrong before you know.

All in all, I have 4 of the 5 teams from the SEC advancing past their super regional and going to Omaha. With that giving the SEC a 50/50 chance of winning it all, at worst, the conference should feel good about their chances of adding another National Championship to it’s history.
