Having a transfer pick out your school to play quarterback for is exciting, but should Aggie fans expect Trevor Knight to start each game this season for Kevin Sumlin?

Trevor Knight bought a lot of SEC equity after beating Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2014 exhibition game that was called the Allstate Sugar Bowl.  Knight tossed four touchdowns against the Tide and totaled 355 total yards of offense, which notched him the MVP of a “consolation” game for Alabama.  At least according to Nick Saban.  Heading into last season, however, Knight lost his job to Baker Mayfield due to injuries and his poor play.  Now that Trevor Knight has transferred to Texas A&M, it seems like he has sewn up the starting job.  Don’t expect him to trot out for each and every first drive for Kevin Sumlin, though.

Nagging Spinal Injury

After an early November game in Norman against Baylor in 2014, Trevor Knight suffered a spinal injury called transient quadriplegia. He was removed from the game and subsequently missed the following week’s game, but did seem fine in locker room. While the injury has healed and there were no signs of structural damage, it is still a spinal injury.

  • Hero BallLook, all quarterbacks play the role of hero from time to time. But that doesn’t mean that every situation needs a hero.  Sometimes even trying to be a hero isn’t smart. It already feels like fact that Trevor Knight bootlegs for the first down, dives headfirst, and suffers a heavy concussion. This isn’t necessary a flaw of Knight’s, but it could definitely cost the quarterback a start.
  • Offensive Line HolesThe Aggies return only two starting offensive linemen in Keaton Sutherland and Avery Gennesy. In a league that hangs its hat on winning the line of scrimmage, the SEC has become a hotbed for premier defensive linemen. Therefore, it is required to have a solid, productive offensive line to excel against the premier defenses in the SEC.  Recently, Texas A&M has had that success along the offensive line.  Just take a look at how many offensive linemen they’ve sent to the NFL recently. The offensive line  this season is a question mark, however, that could put Trevor Knight’s health at risk.
  • InconsistencyIf injuries don’t get Trevor Knight, being hit or miss just might. In Noel Mazzone’s offense, it is imperative to quickly read defenses and make the correct short to intermediate pass. Hitting the right receivers in the right place and at the right time is what the success of the passing attack hinges upon. Consistency is key in any offense, but with the skill set that Knight possesses it may be the reason he keeps the job or not.
  • Just Being Average

Sometimes, things just need to be shaken up. If the Aggies are put into a stagnant situation halfway through the season, Kevin Sumlin may see Trevor Knight’s mediocrity as the culprit. In a season that means so much for Coach Sumlin, he may be forced to play Jake Hubenak in place of Knight in attempt to save his job. Sometimes just being average just doesn’t cut it, especially in the SEC.
