SEC Players of the Week: Week One

Good morning all. We are one week into the college football season and have already seen some great individual and team performances. In this article, we will focus on individual performances, as we give you the SEC Players of the Week. The league announced them just this morning.

Offensive Player of the Week: Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia

Chubb had a phenomenal game against North Carolina. He rushed 32 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns. His final carry of the game was a 55 yard touchdown scamper that put the game away. Chubb’s performance is especially noteworthy considering he suffered a season-ending injury a year ago.

Defensive Player of the Week: Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama

The Tide’s defense was dominant against USC, and one of the main reasons for that dominance was the performance of senior defensive end Jonathan Allen. Allen is a veteran leader on the Tide defensive line.

On Saturday Allen racked up four tackles, two sacks, and two passes defended. Allen harassed Trojan quarterback Max Browne, all night long. Alabama fans will be hoping he has a similar performance against Ole Miss and Chad Kelly.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Elliot Fry, K, South Carolina

Fry proved to be the difference in a tight game against the Vanderbilt Commodores. He hit a 48 yard field goal in the third quarter. Then, in the last minute of the game, Fry connected from 55 to give the Gamecocks a 13-10 victory. The kick was Fry’s career long. He also hit his only extra point attempt of the game.

Freshman of the Week: Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

Williams started at right tackle for the Tide and received a grade of 85. He helped pave the way for Damien Harris to rack up yards on the ground and was also stout in the passing game. As he gets more experience he will only get better. Expect Williams to move to left tackle next season after Cam Robinson goes to the NFL.

Offensive Lineman of the Week: Eric McCoy, C, Texas A&M

McCoy and his compatriots kept Trevor Knight upright for the entire game. Also, they paved the way for the run game, which gained 203 yards and scored three touchdowns. McCoy also made all the calls for the line. McCoy will need to continue his high level of play in the brutal SEC West.

Defensive Lineman of the Week: Deatrich Wise, DE, Arkansas

Wise amassed seven tackles against Louisiana Tech, including a pivotal fourth quarter sack. He is another one of the many talented SEC defensive ends this season. Arkansas as a team was disappointing this Saturday. Wise held up his end of the bargain, however. We will see if his teammates follow his example this week.
