Top five uncommitted prospects at The Opening
By Matt Green
Every year, elite high school football prospects make the trek to Beaverton, Ore. for The Opening, a week-long scouting combine. Here’s a look at the top five uncommitted prospects at this year’s event.
Must Read: Georgia gets commitment from nation's top running back
It’s always interesting when you get elite prospects together at an event like The Opening. With all these players being in high school, it can sometimes be difficult to evaluate prospects when they’re playing against better or worse competition.
The Opening evens the playing field. It’s the best competing against the best, and the cream always rises to the top. Let’s take a look at the top five uncommitted prospects participating at The Opening this year.
Justin Fields (QB)
Harrison HS (Kennesaw, GA)
At 6’3, 221 pounds, Fields is the no. 1 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings. He committed to Penn State back in December but decommitted on June 6. Like most quarterbacks, Fields doesn’t want to carry the recruiting process into his senior year, so he’s hoping to make a decision this summer.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, and Georgia are the biggest contenders to land Fields. Florida State currently holds the 32 percent of the crystal ball predictions for Fields, but the predictions seem to be change by the day.
Micah Parsons (DE)
Harrisburg HS (Harrisburg, PA)
At 6’3, 235 pounds, Parsons is the no. 1 weak-side defensive end in the country. Like Fields, Parsons was once a Penn State commit. He was committed to the Nittany Lions for over a year before re-opening his recruitment.
But unlike Fields, Penn State is still considered a strong candidate to land his commitment. Ohio State currently leads the crystal ball predictions with 67 percent to 33 percent for Penn State. Alabama and Georgia are also two schools in the mix.
Patrick Surtain Jr. (CB)
American Heritage HS (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
The son of former Miami Dolphin, Patrick Surtain Sr., Patrick Surtain Jr. is the no. 1 cornerback prospect in the 2018 class. At 6’2, 181 pounds, he’s got prototype size for a corner. The elder Surtain went to Southern Miss, so legacy will not likely be a factor in his recruitment.
LSU has made a habit of coming into the state of Florida and poaching elite defensive back prospects (Patrick Peterson and Kevin Tolliver II, just to name a couple). The Tigers currently own 88 percent of the crystal ball predictions, while Florida State owns the other 12 percent. But don’t sleep on Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State.

Anthony Cook (CB)
Lamar HS (Houston, TX)
At 6’0, 168 pounds, Cook is the no. 2 cornerback prospect in the country, and the no. 1 player in the state of Texas. According to Cook, he still has 10 schools he’s considering, but he’s hoping to cut it down to three soon, and he’d like to make his commitment by Halloween.
Most experts consider this to be an Ohio State/Texas battle. He’s talked about how he likes the way Ohio State put defensive backs in the NFL, and the Buckeyes currently own 79 percent of the crystal ball predictions for Cook. Clemson and LSU are two other schools that are still in the mix.
Jamaree Salyer (OG)
Pace Academy (Atlanta, GA)
You don’t usually see offensive guards with 5-star ratings, but at 6’4, 342 pounds, that’s exactly what Salyer is. His high school teammate, Andrew Thomas, committed to Georgia at The Opening last year, and many expected Salyer to follow suit. Most experts consider it to be a Georgia/Clemson battle for nation’s no. 1 guard, and the Bulldogs currently own 69 percent of the crystal ball predictions.
