Georgia Football: Is there a Quarterback controversy in Athens?
By Matt Green
Despite many pundits putting the Georgia Bulldogs on upset alert over the weekend, the Bulldogs cruised to a 31-10 win over Appalachian State, but it wasn’t as smooth as you might think.
For the first time in a few seasons, Georgia football fans were expecting the quarterback position to be something they didn’t have to worry about in 2017. Well, that lasted about half a quarter. But there was good news and bad news for Georgia football fans.
On the third possession of the game, starting quarterback Jacob Eason was forced out of bounds and his knee appeared to buckle. Eason tried to walk it off, but ended up laying on the field for a couple minutes while trainers tended to the sophomore signal-caller.
In Kirby Smart’s Monday press conference, he said Eason will not play this Saturday against Notre Dame. While he said he does expect Eason to return this season, he did not put a timetable on his return, just saying that he would be week-to-week moving forward.

That was the bad news. Here’s the good news. In Eason’s limited action, he went 1-for-3 for four yards as Georgia went three-and-out on each of their first two drives of the game. Then the Bulldogs put in true freshman Jake Fromm and he took Georgia’s offense to another level.
Georgia went on a 10-play drive that ended in a punt on Fromm’s first drive, then the Bulldogs went on three straight touchdown drives to take a commanding 21-0 lead on the Mountaineers. Fromm went 10-for-15 for 143 yards and a touchdown in the game.
While Eason may have been the no. 1 pro-style quarterback in the country coming out of high school in 2016, Fromm is no slouch. The Warner Robins, Ga. native was the no. 3 pro-style quarterback and no. 44 overall player according to 247sports’ composite rankings.

Fromm looked sharp in the season opener, but it was also Appalachian State, and I don’t want to put too much stock in one game. It will be interesting to see what the Georgia football team does if and when Eason returns, but with Fromm, they appear to be in good hands.
