SEC Football: Chik-fil-A hosting event for Georgia vs. Auburn at state line
By Abbey Giese
Chik-fil-A will host an event for one of the oldest rivalries in the SEC at the Georgia-Alabama state line.
College football and Chik-fil-A are both deeply rooted in Southern culture. Fans buy the classic chicken sandwiches on game days and even throughout the year on many major college campuses in the South and in the SEC.
This Saturday, Chik-fil-A will be offering free food and a place for Bulldogs and Tigers fans to watch the game between No. 1 Georgia and No. 10 Auburn in West Point, Ga. on the Alabama-Georgia state line in honor of the 125th anniversary of the oldest rivalry in the SEC.
With headquarters in Atlanta and in the middle of SEC territory, Chik-fil-A plays a huge role in the college football world.
The chain sponsors the Chik-fil-A Kickoff Game every Labor Day weekend. SEC teams have played quality nonconference opponents in Atlanta each year since the Kickoff was started in 2008. Chik-fil-A is also the corporate sponsor of the Peach Bowl, which has typically featured an SEC team over the years.
Chik-fil-A has also taken advantage of many advertising opportunities this college football season with several rivalry-themed commercial spots during games.
With so much involvement in the sport, it makes sense for the chain to use the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry for a promotion event, especially since this season’s matchup between the Tigers and the Bulldogs has college football playoff implications. Although it is unlikely, Auburn does have a chance to upset both Georgia and No. 2 Alabama and diminish their playoff chances.
There is also a record to be broken in the upcoming rivalry game. Georgia running back Nick Chubb is extremely close to passing legendary Auburn running back Bo Jackson on the SEC’s all-time rushing list.
The Georgia vs. Auburn rivalry is one that runs deep. It is a game where fans can usually expect the unexpected. However, it is a mostly friendly rivalry. It does not seem to get as ugly as the Iron Bowl or the Cocktail Party.
