The passion and intensity of the Alabama Crimson Tide football fans earned a No. 8 overall ranking and No. 2 in the college category of FanSided’s Fandom 250. Alabama also ranks higher than any other team in the SEC in the rankings.

Anyone who has ever stepped foot in the state of Alabama knows that the ESPN Roll Tide commercial from a few years ago is not really an exaggeration. “Roll Tide!” is an appropriate phrase to use in almost any situation in any given part of Alabama (except maybe the city of Auburn). In this state, Alabama Crimson Tide football is more than just a team. It is a significant aspect of the culture.

The passion of the Crimson Tide fans earned a No. 8 overall ranking and No. 2 in the college category of FanSided’s Fandom 250. Fandom 250 ranks the top 250 fandoms from 16 different categories, including fan bases of sports, entertainment, brands, celebrities, music and more.

For Crimson Tide fans, Alabama football Saturdays are sacred, so there are few things that can come between a Crimson Tide fan and Fall Saturdays. Even scheduling a Fall wedding is out of the question.

More from Southbound and Down

Freeman Reese, who was named No. 8 in ESPN’s top 20 college football super fans list in 2010, became famous in Alabama when he and his wife, Betty, skipped their own daughter’s wedding to attend an Alabama vs. Tennessee game. Their story was also featured in a Hyundai commercial a few years ago.

The fans also feed off of the intensity and competitive drive of their head coach, Nick Saban. The current head coach is the ultimate perfectionist, and it shows in his record with the Crimson Tide.

Saban has an overall record of 130-20 at Alabama. The Crimson Tide has not lost more than three games in a season since 2007, which was Saban’s first year as head coach. He has also led the team to six SEC West titles, five SEC Championships, four national titles and four straight playoff appearances.

Saban developed a winning culture around the program, and fans are so accustomed to it. Therefore, the team cannot satisfy them unless they are at the top. Sometimes others have to remind them of how well things are going for them.

However, the demand for perfection and Alabama fans’ refusal to let anything come between them and their games is exactly what landed them in the top ten of the overall Fandom 250 rankings and at No. 2 in the college category. You can find super fans anywhere in the SEC, but few seem quite as intense as the Crimson Tide faithful.
