SEC football recruiting: new coaches create chaos in 2018
Mississippi State
Dan Mullen’s move to Florida revealed a mess at Mississippi State. New head coach Joe Moorhead is sorting it out while fighting to keep the MSU commitments.
Six recruits de-committed soon after Dan Mullen left for Florida. But Mullen and Mississippi State didn’t have scholarship spots for all the commitments accepted, anyway, or so cornerback recruit Jaylon Reed said. Reed has de-committed from Mississippi State. Oregon, Memphis and Mississippi State are the likely college destinations for the three-star recruit.
Moorhead is also on the offensive. New Orleans Four-star receiver Devonta Jason de-committed from Kansas after Moorhead’s hiring. He unofficially visited Mississippi State in November and committed to play SEC football with the Bulldogs.
Moorhead is also battling new Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt, new Florida head coach Dan Mullen, and Auburn for Tennessee four-star offensive tackle Jerome Carvin.
Tennessee running backs coach Robert Gillespie visited Mississippi State running back commitment Marcus Murphy this week. Will Sammon and Annie Costabile of the Clarion Ledger quoted Murphy.
“I’m confident in my commitment to State. I’m still going to take my visit to Tennessee this weekend, though. If everything goes well, I’ll still be with State.”
Murphy has committed, de-committed and recommitted to Mississippi State during the past 18 months. He remains committed to MSU.
