Thad Matta

ESPN reports Thad Matta is to meet with Georgia officials today. Matta has a 74 percent winning percentage and won 20 or more games in all but one of his 17 seasons as a head coach at Butler, Xavier and Ohio State.

Matta also has a Georgia connection. Greg Matta, the head coach at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw  is Thad Matta’s older brother. The Georgia basketball connection is not insignificant. The younger Matta will have a local insider’s perspective on the Georgia job.

Matta has also expressed interest in the Ole Miss head coach position and Pitt is rumored to have an interest in Matta as well.

Thad Matta is proven and available. His resume is weighty. If Matta decides he is ready, willing and able, expect an announcement before the NCAA Tournament tips off.

Either way, the good news for Georgia basketball fans is that Greg McGarity and his boss, the man that will eventually sign off on the new basketball head coach, President Morehead, are serious about Georgia basketball. It is the first time Georgia has been serious about hiring a basketball head coach since Joel Eaves hired Hugh Durham in 1978.
