Georgia Basketball Fans: Don’t be Those People
Georgia Basketball fell to Mississippi State 68-67. The Bulldogs left it all on the court, but the reason Georgia lost, a fan throwing a stuffed animal on the court with five seconds left on the clock causing a technical foul.
I have seen a lot of different fans across the SEC, from LSU at night to Alabama fans at SEC Media Days. There are all kinds of people who love their SEC sports.
However, the Georgia fan that threw the stuffed animal on the court is not how Georgia fans carry themselves. The Bulldog Nation at least to my knowledge is a group of people who welcome everyone and respect others like they want to be treated. Not this person.
The act upset me and made me embarrassed to be a fan and alumni of the University of Georgia. After the technical foul, I chalked it up and accepted that the fan was just upset after a questionable foul call.
Then I saw that the refs escorted off the court, and fans yelled and booed them all the way off the court. Grandma even threw her popcorn at them. I was shocked. It bothered me that my schools’ fans acted like that.

A grandmother threw her popcorn at a referee. Take a minute and let that soak in and realize she threw food at someone for just doing their job. Now I’m not saying the Bulldogs haven’t gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to their history with officials, but it is a game.
A game that the Bulldogs almost won, and I hate to say it, but the referee got it right. If we are looking at the series of events in the last five seconds of the game and not the entire game, the referee did his job and made the right call.
Georgia fans, please don’t be those people. First of all, this is a rebuilding year for the team, and they have a lot of room to grow. Second, Georgia isn’t known as a basketball school. Not to be harsh, I cannot wait until Georgia can compete in basketball, but that is not this season.
Third, the Bulldogs came back and made it a game, which fans should be proud of and see that this team continues to grow and get better each game. Finally, I hear so much about how crappy other SEC fans are from Georgia people, and they just stooped to the same level.
Now, this article isn’t calling out all Dawg fans, because most of them chalked it up to another loss. But the ones and especially the grandma that threw her popcorn on that poor guy, stop it, just stop it.
Georgia fans it is not like we are Kentucky basketball and this game meant tournament or not. I know that most of yall are likely frustrated, but guess what?
It is still a game.
I have never been in a situation where cussing and throwing stuff on the court and then the official, actually ended well and not in that person escorted out of the facility.
Head coach Tom Crean did a great job, instead of just letting the announcer tell people not to throw things on the court, he got on the microphone himself. The broadcast didn’t pick up on what he said, but I’m glad he said it.
This situation is an embarrassment to the university, Crean, and the players. That isn’t how we act as Georgia students and fans.
Georgia basketball is a work in progress and as a Georgia Alumni, the fans are a work in progress as well. Bulldog fans, don’t be these people, cheer for your team and know that the future is bright for Georgia basketball.
