SEC Baseball has already fought through some adversity this season with the unpredictable weather. Here is a breakdown of what happened through the first week of play and what to expect in Week 2 of the 2019 SEC Baseball season.

Of the 14 SEC baseball teams, seven of them remain undefeated. Three teams in the Eastern Division and four teams in the Western. Out of conference games continue until the middle of March.

The undefeated teams in the East are Tennessee at 4-0, Kentucky and Georgia at 3-0. As for the undefeated West teams, they are Texas A&M at 5-0, Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State at 4-0.

Week One Breakdown

The Vols swept Appalachian State and didn’t allow a single run in all three games. Tennessee won 6-0, 2-0, and 3-0. Then on Feb. 19, the Vols took on Northern Kentucky and demolished them 18-0.

Kentucky swept Austin Peay. The Wildcats won 8-4, 12-5, and 11-1. Georgia swept Dayton winning 5-1, 10-7, and 13-1. The Bulldogs had to postpone their two-game series against Kennesaw State for Feb. 19-20 due to weather.

Missouri and Florida were the two teams that dropped at least two games. The Gators are currently 3-2 while Missouri is 2-3.

More from Southbound and Down

Florida dropped the last two games losing 1-6 against South Florida and 1-7 against North Florida.

Missouri was the only SEC team to lose its opening series. The Tigers lost game one (4-5) and three (2-4) to North Florida. Then on Feb. 21 Missouri lost to Northeastern 3-4.

Vanderbilt who the coaches picked to win the SEC already dropped a game and have a 3-1 record.

The Dores didn’t host an out of conference series in the opening weekend. Instead, the team played in the MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament.

Vanderbilt faced off with Virginia, Cal State Fullerton and TCU. They went 2-1 in the tournament with respectable wins over Virginia 15-9 and Cal State Fullerton 14-9. However, the bats went cold for the Dores and lost to No. 19 TCU 2-10.

The undefeated West teams are Texas A&M at 5-0, Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State at 4-0.

Texas A&M swept Fordham winning 4-0, 19-6 and 3-1. Then the Aggies defeated SF Austin 5-3 on Feb. 19 and Prairie View 9-1 on Feb. 20.

Arkansas defeated East Illinois in all three games and won 15-7, 12-3 and 3-2. The Hogs are currently in a three-game series with Southern California taking game one 6-3.

LSU gave no mercy to the three teams it faced this past weekend. The Tigers beat UL Monroe 12-7, Army 6-5, and Air Force 17-5. Then LSU skimmed by SE Louisiana 6-5 on Feb. 19. The Tigers had one more midweek game slated against Northwestern St. but got postponed due to the weather.

Mississippi State demolished Youngstown State 14-3, 14-2, and 8-0. Then the Bulldogs skimmed by UAB in a midweek matchup 3-2.

Auburn won the series against Georgia Southern but dropped game two 5-7 against the Eagles.  Similar to its in-state rivals, Alabama won the series against Presbyterian but lost the second game 1-4. The Tide had a game against Alabama State postponed on Feb. 20 as well.

Game two seemed to be the west teams issue. Ole Miss dropped the second game to Wright state 5-9. The Rebels were another team affected by weather as they had to postpone the first game against Arkansas State on Feb. 19.

Despite some teams losing games, the opening weekend seemed a success. The teams got to play other players beside themselves finally and the SEC, for the most part, flexed its muscles.

Week One Player of the Week Honors

Vanderbilt was one of three teams to receive week one SEC honors. According to the SEC website, Austin Martin received the honors for week one of the season.

Martin scored nine runs and got on base 12 of 16 at bat appearances. Ten of his first 11 appearances got him on base. He finished a home run shy of hitting a cycle during the win over Virginia.

Between the two victories for the Commodores, Martin scored four runs during each game. He batted .600 and had a .750 on-base percentage in Vanderbilt’s three games.

Texas A&M pitcher John Doxakis took home the Pitcher of the Week honors. He led all conference pitchers in strikeouts. Doxakis tied his career high of 12 strikeouts during Friday’s win.

He allowed one hit, which was an infield single, and no runner reached scoring positions during the seven innings he pitched. Doxakis held Fordham to a .042 on-base percentage and retired the last 12 batters he faced.

The last weekly award went to LSU for Freshman of the Week. Jaden Hill earned his first Freshman of the week honors after the right-hander allowed one run on four hits in five innings.

He walked one batter and recorded eight strikeouts in his debut on Sunday against Airforce.
