The final game featuring an SEC team in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, LSU takes on Iowa State in the Round of 64.

A five-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, LSU enters the Big Dance holding a 22-11 overall record for the year, as well as having gone 9-9 in SEC play during the regular season. The nation’s No. 5 team in defensive efficiency according to KenPom allowing only 63.5 PPG, the Tigers own a resume that includes wins over three NCAA Tournament teams, but will now be playing under interim coach Kevin Nickelberry after the Tigers parted ways with Will Wade last week.

Averaging 73.1 PPG offensively, LSU is led by the 2021-22 SEC Sixth Man of the Year Tari Eason (16.9 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 2 SPG), as well as three other double-digit scorers in Darius Days, Xavier Pinson, and Brandon Murray. Averaging a combined 11.1 SPG as well, the Tigers will also use Eric Gaines often in the backcourt, while Efton Reid and Mwani Wilkinson will be key players in the frontcourt.

Iowa State on the other hand enters the 2022 NCAA Tournament with a 20-12 overall record for the year, and despite finishing the regular season among the bottom-half of the Big 12 at 7-11, own a resume that includes wins over six NCAA Tournament teams. Despite the resume however, the Cyclones have struggled at times in recent weeks having lost seven of their last 11 games, as well as their last three.

Similar to LSU previously, Iowa State is an elite defensive team allowing only 63 PPG to opponents (rank No. 10 nationally in defensive efficiency according to KenPom), but have struggled at times offensively averaging only 66.5 per game. Led by star guard Izaiah Brockington (17.2 PPG, 7.1 RPG), the Cyclones have a rotation that could have 9-10 others see time, a group that includes impact scoring guards in Tyrese Hunter, Gabe Kalscheur, and Caleb Grill, as well as forward Aljaz Kunc.

LSU vs Iowa State 2022 NCAA Tournament Prediction

A matchup between two elite defensive teams, we are likely set for a close, low-scoring contest between the Tigers and Cyclones on Friday night. When deciding the winner, you could certainly make an argument that LSU is the better team offensively, with the trio of Eason, Days, and Reid in the paint being the difference. Prediction: LSU 74, Iowa State 68
