The hits are a plenty when it comes to college football, and especially the SEC, the seemingly increasing size of players year-over-year and the physicality of the league from every team keep it front and center in the highlights on social media and beyond.

While player safety is always paramount, sometimes the hits are so intense that injuries are bound to happen. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has seen hundreds of devastating blows delivered by both offensive and defensive players. Some players seemed to do this on a weekly basis to the opponent, while others just happened to be in the right place at the right time on a single play.

Junior Rosegreen lays out Reggie Brown

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Reggie Brown gets leveled by Auburn’s Junior Rosegreen during the 2004 rendition of the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.” Rosegreen ended up being okay, but was knocked out cold on the field. The Tigers would go on to win the game 24-6.

Rodgers who?

Alabama defensive back Mark Baron clocks Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers before he can make it to the sideline in a 2011 contest. \

Rodgers spoke on the hit at SEC Media Days in 2012. "We called an option play, I got a keep read, I cut up and our fullback decided to throw and dive at the knees of the corner," Rodgers said. "A great block. I just didn't see Mark Barron with a 20-yard head start coming downhill at me. By the time I noticed, it was too late."

Baron’s hit was one of dozens of large booms during head coach Nick Saban’s tenure with the Crimson Tide which spanned 17 years.

Josh Jacobs takes out his anger

With as many legendary hits as there were during the Saban era, one on the offense side of the ball was also worth mentioning. In this clip, Crimson Tide running back Josh Jacobs trucks an Oklahoma defender in the 2018 Orange Bowl on his way to the endzone.

The backstory here is that Jacobs is an Oklahoma native that was not recruited by the Sooners. We saw all of his pent up frustration unleashed in one play. The Tide would go on to defeat the Sooners 45-34.

Jadeveon Clowney

Many remember the 2013 Outback Bowl between the Michigan Wolverines and South Carolina Gamecocks for this reason alone. Gamecock defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney got an amazing jump on the snap, propelling himself into the backfield full force into the running back. It is safe to say that Clowney’s spurs were up and intact on this play.

Blocked into mid-air

Kentucky ‘s Dicky Lyons clears out for his receiver blocking LSU Tigers defensive back Craig Steltz into midair. Steltz was immediately sent to the sideline, and understandably so.
