Mobile to Tuscaloosa. That is the trek that Jennifer Kittrell and her husband Britt make each Saturday home game to cheer on the Crimson Tide during football season. And oh yeah, equally as important- they tailgate too.
Considered two of the biggest Alabama fanatics from lower Alabama, The Kittrell’s began parking in 2011 between 11th avenue and Wallace Wade Avenue, west of Bryant Denny Stadium, and a few years later it evolved into a tailgating group known as the “#Twittertailgaters” that met on the platform now known as X (formerly known as Twitter).
How did the tailgating group start over social media?
“We met and tailgated in Atlanta with new Alabama X (formerly known as Twitter) friends at the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game. I told them that day about our game day set up in Tuscaloosa, invited them to join us and the game day tradition of ‘#Twittertailgaters' began!”
While fans meeting in person is common for meeting friends and comradery, it is really neat that the Kittrell’s evolved their tailgate through social media.
“Since the first tailgate, we have met many great new people and of course Alabama fans who we now consider our ‘Bama family. We love our location, because it allows us to continue making friends, and building relationships,” Kittrell said.
At this point, the Kittrell's have met folks from nine different states as well as Canada.
What is the tailgating atmosphere like for the fans?
“The property where we park is owned by an amazing family who have a long history with the University of Alabama and share a love and devotion to all sports, but especially football,” Kittrell said.
Where can the #TwitterTailgaters be found? According to Kittrell, their spot is located directly across from the Founders Club entrance, so it should be pretty easy to spot, and all are welcome.
Whether you are an Alabama fan or fan of the opposing team, college football and its traditions are paralleled by very few. Make sure to stop by the Kittrell’s #Twittertailgaters area next time you’re in Tuscaloosa on gameday.
