Loud comments from Texas A&M's Conner Weigman heat up rivalry
The last time the Texas Longhorns played their in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies was in 2011 before the Aggies joined the SEC. Fast forward another 13 years and now the Longhorns have done the same allowing for a rivalry to be renewed.
This rivalry known as the “Lone Star Showdown” is so intense that the Aggies even sing about sawing the horns off of the Longhorns in the “Aggie War Hymn.” The Longhorns own the rivalry which dates back to 1894 by a score of 76-35-5. By 1911, the Longhorns led the series 15-4-2.
The dominance of the Longhorns historically in the rivalry however has not kept Aggie fans and players at bay as the bunch seems ready to renew the rivalry this year which will take place on Thanksgiving weekend in College Station.
In fact, Texas A&M starting quarterback Conner Weigman went as far as predicting a win against the Longhorns according to www.si.com.
What did Conner Weigman say about the Texas Longhorns?
“I mean I’ve always wanted to beat Texas,” Weigman said. “That’s a given. That’s gonna happen.”
Being bold enough to claim you will beat your in-state rival is one thing, but the current state of each program is even more of an eye-opening comment from Weigman. The Aggies are currently under a first year head coach in 2024 after the firing of Jimbo Fisher which saw them finish the 2023 season at 7-6.
While the Aggies are in a rebuild, the Longhorns have done their rebuilding and seemed primed for another playoff push in 2024 under head coach Steve Sarkisian who is heading into his fourth season in Austin. Sarkisian led the Longhorns to a 12-2 record in 2023 which included a College Football Playoff appearance.
For Aggie fans, it is nice to see a player supremely confident in his abilities and his team to the point of saying they are going to beat their rival. However, this also gives motivation to the Longhorns who as mentioned seem to be in a better state as far as their overall program goes heading into 2024. Weigman may have been better off cutting his statement short and not adding in that the Aggies were indeed going to beat the Longhorns.
Nonetheless, what has been said has been said and it is too late for that. With the 2024 season upon us, this one comment from Weigman has juiced up the Lone Star Showdown again for this season and beyond.
