The Hurry Up:  Biggest Takeaways from The SEC (Week 6)

facebooktwitterreddit

In the weekly Hurry Up from Southbound and Down, I’ll provide that one thing that stuck out most to me from each SEC team from the weekend.  After that it is up to you.  We’ll leave the comments section open and you are free to tell me I’m an idiot, agree, or explain why you know something we don’t.  This is an SEC page, after all, home of some of the most boisterous fans in the country.  As always, we’ll go in the order the teams played.

More from SEC Football

LSU:  This portion of the post has become painfully obvious at this point.  Everyone knows what I’m going to say here:  Brandon Harris is an absolute man amongst boys!  . . . Kidding.  The takeaway here is Brandon Harris having a solid day at quarterback.  Sure USCe’s defense is lackluster and they were stacking the box, but that hasn’t helped Harris perform in the past.  If Harris can provide mediocre QB play in big games, LSU is a threat to win the SEC and make the College Football Playoff.

South Carolina:  In addition to increased retirement talk for Spurrier, the question for the 2015 Gamecocks is now a simple one.   At 2-4 with more games they’re likely to lose than win, can South Carolina somehow sneak into a bowl to end the season?  My hunch is not even close.

Arkansas:   This slot not always guaranteed to be strictly football.  The takeaway here is the Bret Bielema is a clown.

Not only does he look foolish with his focus on other team’s schedules, he cheats.  Call it what you want, but the man clearly baited and flopped to draw an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Cam Robinson.  Then he celebrated like a delusional child.  Can he please keep losing so Arkansas can find a coach that won’t embarrass the SEC.  I hear Bobby Petrino might be interested

Alabama

Jake Coker’s stats may not look bad (24-33, 262 yards, 2 TDs/2 INTs), but man.  He is just not that good.  Coker consistently missed open receivers and continued to struggle with the deep ball.  Alabama’s defense saved them in this one, as Derrick Henry only gained 95 yards on 27 carries (3.5 YPC).

Florida

Any chance of this being about their impressive win against Mizzou went out the window when it was announced Will Grier will miss the remainder of the season and part of next year.  Florida will appeal and be on the lookout for a followup story here.  In the meantime, Treon Harris will be the starter for a Gators squad that was looking to make the SEC Championship and possibly more.

Missouri

Drew Lock is not ready.  While Maty Mauk is serving a suspension rather frustrated, Drew Lock continues to struggle to fill in the void at quarterback.  Lock completed less than half his passes, threw 2 interceptions and lost 24 yards with his feet.  Fans that thought Mauk was the problem are now dreaming for his level of quarterback play.

Ole Miss

Ole Miss dominated an inferior opponent like it was week 1.  Yawn.  Seriously . . . can we get a Tunsil update?

Georgia

Mark Richt’s seat is scorching right now.  After looking like a College Football Playoff contender to open the season, Georgia has lost back to back games.  Losing to Alabama the way they did, but losing to a disappointing Tennessee team really hurts his case.  Nick Chubb played only one play, though, after a gruesome injury.   You can youtube it if you’d like…it hurts me too much to do so.  With Chubb likely out for the season and Greyson Lambert looking subpar, the losing bus may make several stops in Athens before the year is out.

Tennessee

So this is the Joshua Dobbs we were supposed to be excited about before the season started.  Dobbs straight up clowned like it was field day against the Bulldog’s defense.  Dobbs passed for 312 yards, 3 TDs (1 INT), and added 118 rushing yards to go with 2 rushing touchdowns.  That is an insane performance.  One that could get him on Southbound and Down’s Heisman watch…Ben Richardson where ya at?

Mississippi State

The only thing that keeps this game from getting the “yawn” treatment is that Mississippi State’s two of it’s quarterbacks got sick before the game.  After Dak Prescott played long enough to build a lead (3 series), Nick Fitzgerald guided the ship the rest of the way.  Fitzgerald went 6-7 for 141 yards and 2 TDs.  Solid numbers but nothing to read into considering the competition.
