SEC Football, The Hurry Up: Biggest Takeaways from the SEC East (Week 11)

facebooktwitterreddit

In the weekly Hurry Up from Southbound and Down, I’ll provide that one thing that stuck out most to me from each SEC team from the weekend.  After that it is up to you.  We’ll leave the comments section open and you are free to tell me I’m an idiot, agree, or explain why you know something we don’t.  This is an SEC page, after all, home of some of the most boisterous fans in the country.  As always, we’ll go in the order the teams played.

One tweak to pass versions of the Hurry Up is that we’ll cover the quick hits of the SEC West and SEC East separately.  First up was the SEC West.  Now we’ll turn our attention to the SEC East.

Florida Gators

The Gators are learning to win with Treon Harris at quarterback.  Florida let South Carolina back into the game after a quick start but found a way to win 24-14.  This comes a week after barely squeaking a win against SEC East cellar dweller Vandy.  It may not be pretty, but Florida is continuing to win on their way to Atlanta.

South Carolina

There really isn’t much to say about South Carolina that has not been already said ad nauseam the last 3 weeks.  The Gamecocks continue to play their hearts out for Shawn Elliott and Gamecock nation, which is commendable under their circumstances.  Unfortunately for them, they are getting the same results and have compiled 7 losses on the season.

Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs emerged victorious in a game that pitted two rivals with similar situations.  Both have fallen short of preseason expectations and are beginning to hear rumblings about the safety of their head coach.  Georgia showed up to play a little more and pulled out a 7 point victory in what is normally a high stakes rivalry game with Auburn.

Tennessee Volunteers

The takeaways here?  0.   Tennessee defeated North Texas 24-0. North Texas lost the previous week to Louisiana Tech by a score of 56-13.  Tennessee handled business in unspectacular fashion and added a “w” to their season total.  Nothing to see here.

Kentucky Wildcats

Wildcat fans have to be having deja vu.  The Kentucky Wildcats started the 2014 season 5-1 and still managed to miss a bowl game.  In 2015, Kentucky began the season 4-1 with games against Auburn, Vanderbilt and Charlotte remaining.  The Wilcats needed two of those but are 0-2 so far.  The bowl dreams of Kentucky will, like last year, ride on their game with Louisville.

Vanderbilt Commodores

If Derek Mason can find an offense to go with his defense at Vanderbilt, people around Nashville will be saying “James who?” in no time.  Mason’s defense made two goal-line stands and intercepted 2 passes (one for a touchdown).  In a season where no one expected Vanderbilt to contend, the Commodores have played elite teams in the SEC tight and have scored two conference wins.

Missouri Tigers

After hunger strikes and the announcement by Gary Pinkel that he would be retiring to conclude the season, it would have been easy to understand if Missouri came out flat.  Instead, Mizzou pulled out an upset win over BYU and gave Missouri legend Gary Pinkel a fitting win after his retirement announcement.
