SEC Football, The Hurry Up: Biggest Takeaways from the SEC West (Week 11)
In the weekly Hurry Up from Southbound and Down, I’ll provide that one thing that stuck out most to me from each SEC team from the weekend. After that it is up to you. We’ll leave the comments section open and you are free to tell me I’m an idiot, agree, or explain why you know something we don’t. This is an SEC page, after all, home of some of the most boisterous fans in the country. As always, we’ll go in the order the teams played.
One tweak to pass versions of the Hurry Up is that we’ll cover the quick hits of the SEC West and SEC East separately. First up is the SEC West.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Derrick Henry has, or is close to, surpassing Leonard Fournette as the Heisman favorite from the SEC. Henry compiled another 200 yard rushing game and two touchdowns to lead the Crimson Tide offense against Mississippi State. Alabama, in dominating Mississippi State 31-6, showed they are primed for a playoff run.

Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Bulldogs offense this year is Dak Prescott. No, you may not understand. He IS their offense. Prescott completed 22 of 43 passes for 300 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He also carried the ball 26 times for only 14 yards. If you can shut the “Dak Attack” down, Mississippi State has no alternative plan.
Arkansas Razorbacks
If this were college basketball, Arkansas would be an 8 or 9 side in the NCAA tournament that absolutely no one wants to play. They’d be the projected Cinderella. A week after Allen destroyed the secondary of Ole Miss, the Razorbacks won with defense and over 300 yards of rushing from their tailbacks. This team is dangerous.
LSU Tigers
Leonard Fournette should ring up Dak Prescott to discuss how it feels to be a team’s only source of offense. Fournette was again held under 100 yards rushing and managed only one touchdown. While his 4.8 YPC average and 36 yards receiving on 3 catches are a nice day against an SEC defense, LSU has no chance unless he is going off.
Auburn Tigers
It looked like the Auburn Tigers were beginning to figure things out. After close battles against Arkansas and Ole Miss, Auburn seemed to break through against Texas A&M last week. After losing to Georgia, though, the Auburn faithful are thankful to have Idaho still on the schedule. Auburn needs that game just to be bowl eligible. Remember the preseason expectations and let that sink in. Crazy.
Texas A&M Aggies
Kyler Murray turns the ball over. A lot. While Murray looked much better than he did against Auburn, it is in no way a good sign that the Aggies turned the ball over twice in the air against Western Carolina. If the Aggies are going to be a contender with Murray under center, Murray has to protect the ball. The good news is the freshman has plenty of time to figure out how to do that.
