SEC Championship: Rivalry Saturday also Championship Saturday

Despite 3 losses on the season, Ole Miss still has a chance to win the SEC West if Alabama falters in the Iron Bowl.  SEC Football is intense, the SEC West is insane.

Alabama sits at 10-1 with victories over LSU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Georgia.  They seem to be a lock to play in the SEC Championship game against Florida after the regular season ends.

Ole Miss sits at 8-3 with victories over Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M.  They seem to be destined to await word on which bowl game they will be playing in and not much else.

Believe it or not, though, Ole Miss still has a chance to win the SEC West.  The Rebels topped Alabama in week 3 and, due to that victory, are only one game behind Alabama in the standings.  If Alabama were to fail to beat Auburn, Ole Miss would own the tie breaker over Alabama and meet Florida in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

Could that actually happen?

Mississippi State sat in the exact same position last year heading into Rivalry Saturday in the SEC.  They needed an Alabama loss in the Iron Bowl and to defeat Ole Miss in Oxford to win the SEC West.  Neither of those things happened, though, and Mississippi State missed out on Atlanta in what was arguably the greatest season in school history.

Suffice it to say that Alabama is used to the pressure of having to win the biggest game on its schedule, even with the added pressure of an SEC Championship appearance on the line.

Mississippi needs to defeat Mississippi State and have Alabama lose the Iron Bowl in order to make the SEC Championship Game.  The biggest advantage they have over the situation Mississippi State was in last year is that the Tide must travel to Auburn.  The biggest disadvantage Mississippi has, though, is that Auburn simply isn’t very good this year.

For the second straight year, the Iron Bowl and Egg Bowl could both have huge implications on which team makes the trip to Atlanta in 2015.  Also for the second straight year, betting on the Mississippi team would be quite a risky proposition.
