Joshua Dobbs is one of 5 SEC football players to make the early betting odds list for Heisman Trophy; we discuss whether you should buy or sell.

5 SEC football players made Bovada’s list of players they were willing to put odds on to win the Heisman Trophy.  Unsurprisingly, Deshaun Watson leads that group and is closely followed by Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette.

If you continue scrolling down the list, you see 4 more SEC football players make the list.  We’ll start from the bottom and work our way back to Fournette.  At the bottom of the list and tied with Alabama’s Calvin Ridley with +1600 odds is Joshua Dobbs.

Buy:

Joshua Dobbs gets the benefit of playing SEC football and playing in the SEC East.  Why does that matter?  National perception of the conference is that

it is the toughest league in America.  A writer in California likely doesn’t pay as much attention to the fact that the SEC East currently includes several cupcake victories that should allow Dobbs to pad his stats.

According to espn.com, Dobss threw for 2,291 yards and 15 touchdowns against only 5 interceptions in 2015.  He also added 10 rushing touchdowns to go with two games in which he rushed for over 100 yards.  If he can toss a few more touchdowns to give him a 20+/10+ touchdown total, he could make some serious noise for the Heisman.  This is his fourth year at quarterback in Butch Jones so his numbers should only improve.

Sell:

As much as playing SEC football should bolster his Heisman odds, Dobbs is just too inconsistent to take seriously as a Heisman candidate.  Dobbs get gets quality matchups outside the East with SEC football opponents Alabama and Texas A&M, as well as ACC opponent Virginia Tech.  I’m betting he only performs well in one of those games based on his track record.

The only quality defenses Dobbs was able to complete 60% of his passes against were Missouri and Vanderbilt.  As much as I respect each of those teams, those numbers aren’t going to impress Heisman voters.  What will turn them away is another 41.9% completion game like he had against Oklahoma.

More negatives?  Dobbs failed to complete at least 60% of his passes in 7 games this year.  He also failed to throw for more than 200 yards 8 times.  As much as being a dual threat quarterback helps to offset that, those numbers are just too low in any conference, much less SEC football.

Final Verdict:

Sell.  Sell, sell, sell.  Dobbs finished strong and the hype train is taking off like it did before the 2015 season.  I believe the Volunteers and Dobbs will be improved in 2016, I just don’t think he has a realistic shot at the Heisman.  The sell factors heavily outweigh the buy factors here.
