According to AL.com, Johnson Jr. has been granted his release by Texas A&M and word on the street has it he will be making his way to Tuscaloosa to play for his dad. The younger Johnson only averaged 1.4 points per game as a freshman for the Aggies.
Since he will only be a sophomore this coming season, he will be forced to sit out a year before he is eligible to play for his father; an NCAA rule that applies to transfers unless they graduate from the school they are transferring from.
Coming out of high school, Johnson was a three star player and the 70th ranked point guard in the country according to 247 Sports.
Give Texas A&M credit for allowing Johnson to transfer and be with his father. Sometimes when a kid decides to transfer, the school won’t allow him to do so within the same conference. As far as the impact this will have on Alabama, we won’t know that until the 2016 season.
How much playing time he gets will be of course determined by his father, his play on the court and the other players on the team. Avery Johnson doesn’t look like the type that would allow his kid to play unless he had earn the right. We’ll see next year if he earns the right to get on the court.
