After much thought and research, Auburn has decided not to claim more football national championships.

More from Alabama Crimson Tide

Auburn only claims two national titles 1957 and 2010, but they also were planning to claim national championship banners in 1910, 1913, 1914, 1983, 1993 and 2004 which have would have brought their titles to eight.

Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs said the Tigers would be content with what they have.

“We’ve earned what we’ve earned and people can count it different ways, but we’ve earned what we’ve earned,” Jacobs said.

“Those players on those teams, like me in 1983, it doesn’t matter if you hang a banner or not. I know what we did.”

Plus, it would an embarrassment if they had claim another title considering the fact that they have always made fun of Alabama claiming 15 national championships.

Jacobs comments may be a shot at Alabama claiming as many titles as they do.

Although, the NCAA only recognizes about half of those titles. Despite that, the Tide still leads the nation in national championship titles in football according to the NCAA record books.

Auburn has always taken pride in the fact that they never claimed that many championships like Alabama, but this never would have been bought up had Jacobs not mention it after the Tigers lost the BCS title to Florida State last year.

How did championship gate get started? By former Alabama athletic director Wayne Atcheson who upon a little research himself back in the 1980’s, added five more to Alabama’s national championship list.

Since then, the controversy over who has this many titles continues. But apparently, Auburn decided to bow out gracefully and accept the two that according to Jacobs, that they have earned.
