SEC Football (Rivalry Coaches): Winner of Best SEC Assistant Coach

facebooktwitterreddit

While the SEC Coaches were in a battle for supremacy in the eyes of college football fans, the coordinators have also been locked up in a battle for assistant authority.  After 3 round to determine who was the best SEC assistant coach, we have worked our way to a conclusion.

More from Alabama Crimson Tide

The coordinator battles, unlike the head coaches, were limited to SEC coaches.  They were pitted against each other and it was left to the fans to decide who the best was.  After a few upsets and surprises, the end result has finally been reached.

One of the most well-known assistants in all of college football has emerged victorious.  We also know that defense wins championships, so no one should be surprised who has the ….ahem….prestigious….ahem….title of “Southbound and Down’s Top Assistant of 2015” to add to their resume.

Before we announce our winner, let’s take a look back at our previous results.

Round 1

The results of the round one are as follow:

Kirby Smart (68%) defeated Lane Kiffin

Rhett Lashlee (61%) defeated Jeremy Pruitt

Dave Wommack (63%) defeated Brian Schottenheimer

John Chavis (76%) defeated Will Muschamp

Unlike the battles between head coaches, these battles were not particularly close.  The biggest win was also the biggest surprise.  When these matchups were originally created, I assumed Chavis-Muschamp would be the closest of the battles.  Instead, Chavis soundly defeated Muschamp.  As expected, both the Auburn and A&M defenses have been improved in 2015.  This matchup, however, did not go as anticipated.

Round 2

Round two also had some interesting subplots as well.

Kirby Smart (62%) defeated Rhett Lashlee (38%)

Dave Wommack (56%) defeated Will Muschamp (44%)

While spread offenses are all the rage in the SEC these days, fans still realize that defense wins championships.  Rhett Lashlee was the last remaining offensive coach in the coordinator battle and he fell to Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.   That leaves us with an all defensive coordinator battle for round three and all the marbles in this competition.

Round 3 (The Championship)

Kirby Smart (52%) defeated Dave Wommack

Kirby Smart has coached some of the most dominant defenses in the history of college football.  Maybe* it’s the countless players he has sent to the NFL.  Maybe it’s the 3 National Championship staffs he has been a part of.  Maybe it’s the 2009 Broyles Award (which goes to the nation’s best assistant coach) or the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year Award.  Whatever it is, Southbound and Down nation will get no argument from me on this one.
