SEC Football Power Rankings (Week 7)

Let’s not mince words here.  Let’s not pretend this is anything of outside what it is.  This is the SEC Football Power Rankings.  This is a list of the best, and worst, teams in the SEC.  Current accomplishments and future prospects with both be used.  What could happen today that shifts these rankings?  Quite a bit actually.

Alabama-Texas A&M and Florida-LSU have the potential to shift the top of these rankings dramatically.  Kentucky would have been higher than Auburn, but they fell by a field goal to the Tigers Thursday night.  Now on to what matters:

14 Vanderbilt:  There is not much that needs to be said here.  The Commodores have not won an SEC game since 2013.  Win against South Carolina and we’ll talk.

13 South Carolina:  Steve Spurrier abandoned ship in the midst of a 2-4 (0-4 SEC) 2015 season.  Things could potentially get much worse with Spurrier gone.  Here’s hoping the players come out with pride and try to win a few for the Head Ball Coach.

12.  Missouri:  4-2 you say?  1-2 with their only conference win coming against South Carolina is my only response.  The Tigers have 0 quality wins and have looked incompetent on offense with Drew Lock under center.

11.  Kentucky:  Do I think the 4-2 Wildcats are the 11th best team in the SEC?  Not really.  But losing to Auburn, even if only by a field goal, will drop you down anyone’s power rankings in 2015.

10.  Auburn:  It is insane to think this team was once favored to win the SEC and Jeremy Johnson was supposed to be a Heisman contender.  That will be forgotten soon, but no one is forgetting Leonard Fournette’s performance against this team in week 3.

9.  Arkansas:  Putting up a fight against Alabama for 3 quarters is the only thing keeping the Razorbacks from having double digits posted next to their name.

8.  Georgia:  After looking like a playoff contender to start the season, Georgia isn’t even a contender to be mentioned in the top 4 teams of the SEC.  Two straight SEC losses, including one by 28, will do that to a team.

7.  Tennessee:  Joshua Dobbs started looking like the quarterback many thought he would be this past Saturday against Georgia.  If he keeps it up, the Volunteers could make a slow climb to the top third of these rankings.

6.  Mississippi State:  Mississippi State has not done anything to impress anyone.  But they have won the games they were supposed to and have been competitive in their losses.

5.  Mississippi:  CBS has the Rebels as their second ranked team in the SEC.  I’m holding out until they beat a quality opponent before I can put that type of faith in the Rebels for the second time this season.

4.  Florida:  Will Grier made Jim McElwain’s life a lot more difficult with his suspension.  He made mine a lot easier.  The Gators have earned a top 2 spot in these rankings but until they prove they can win without Grier (they can prove it against LSU today), they can’t rank any higher than this.

3.  LSU:  The Tigers only being third is not the way to look at this.  Leonard Fournette and a defense carrying this team to this high a ranking despite inept quarterback play is.

2.  Texas A&M:  It could be argued that TAMU deserves the #1 spot.  But based on the body of work, TAMU’s quality wins do not stack up well against the other teams in this portion of the rankings.

1.  Alabama:  It pains me to put a team with a loss ahead of several that do not.  But Alabama has quality wins, a quality loss and the deepest team in the conference.  They may finish with more than one loss, but this spot is theirs until that second loss comes.
