SEC Football: Quick Hits for December Bowl Games

facebooktwitterreddit

10 SEC Football teams received bowl bids this week, some in premiere matchups.  Of those 10  games, the SEC team is favored in 9 of them.

While you can expect more in depth analysis and predictions as bowl season approaches, right now let’s just take a look at the December matchups and why so many SEC teams are favored.*

Texas Bowl

Tuesday, December 29th, 2015 @ 9 PM EST

LSU (-6.5) V Texas Tech

LSU limped to the finish to end the 2015 regular season after looking like an SEC contender for months.  A win against Texas A&M likely saved Miles his job, but it was too late for the Tigers to be considered elite to the bowl selection committee.  Texas Tech’s offense is prolific under Kliff Kingsbury.  LSU is favored because they have a stout defense and Leonard Fournette should be able to destroy the Texas Tech defense.  It is only 6.5 points because just how efficient the Tech offense has been at times this season.

Auburn (-3) V Memphis

Auburn’s offense has found a groove to end the 2015 season.  I’m not saying they found their groove, that is too much of a stretch.  This Auburn offense does look lightyears ahead of where they were in October, though.  Memphis may still be favored, though, if Justin Fuente had not accepted the job at Virginia Tech.  This game being in Auburn’s backyard doesn’t hurt their chances, either.

Belk Bowl

December 30th, 2015 @ 3:30 EST

Mississippi State (-5.5) V North Carolina State

Dan Mullen has seemingly been linked to every Power 5 head coach opening this offseason.  Whether there is truth to that or it was a media creation, it seems that it has helped to keep the line respectable.  Mullen may not have a great track record against elite competition.  He doesn’t lose, however, to lose to teams he is not supposed to.  Anyone care to explain how NC State is supposed to win?

Music City Bowl

Texas A&M (-3) V Louisville

  • Kevin Sumlin needs a dominant win to avoid entering the 2016 season on a scorching hot seat.  Sumlin has signed elite classes and has an SEC legend for his defensive coordinator, yet has only had elite level success in Johnny Manziel’s Heisman award winning season.  Texas A&M should not have a problem dispatching and covering against a mediocre 7-5 Louisville team.

    Cotton Bowl (National Semifinal)

    Thursday, December 31st, 2015 @ 8 PM EST

    Alabama (-10) V Michigan State

I’ve got nothing.  I don’t know how Alabama is favored by 10.  We posted earlier how this game was the better of the two national semifinals to watch.  So obviously Vegas knows something I don’t here.
