Lane Kiffin has had a great week at The University of Alabama. Last Saturday he choreographed a 52-6 pasting of his former team who fired him at 3am on the tarmac at LAX and now he has a freshly approved raise and small extension to his current contract.
Kiffin will get paid $1.4 million over an 8 month period until Feb. 28, 2017 during the third and final year of his current contract. This makes Kiffin the highest paid Alabama assistant coach, ahead of Jeremy Pruitt, who makes $1 million per year on his current deal.
Doing the math, that amounts to $2.1 million prorated over a full year for Kiffin. He previously made $680,000 during his first two years in Tuscaloosa and was scheduled to make $714,000 before the new deal was struck. Alabama also provides the monthly dues for Kiffin’s membership at the North River Yacht Club.
So What Does this Mean For Alabama Football?
Well, probably not too much in the long run. Kiffin will almost certainly get a head coaching offer after this season. Can Alabama afford to keep him if that happens? Probably so. But will they be willing to pay an assistant a head coach’s salary. Probably not.

Alabama Football fans should enjoy this season with Kiffin. Because it is probably the last he will spend at the Capstone. It’s no coincidence that Nick Saban just happened to bring in Steve Sarkisian, who was co-offensive coordinator with Kiffin at USC. Kiffin will likely bolt after this season, and Sarkisian will step in as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
